July 18th, 2009 - Spey Casting Clinic
Spey casting is a very quickly growing arena amongst flyfisherman. Originating in Scotland on the River Spey, this casting technique was intended to allow for longer casts and better line management in tight quarters for Atlantic Salmon. Spey casting is also a very useful style here in the Pacific Northwest. It works well for steelhead and tight trout rivers.  This style of casting is often referred to as two or double handed casting. This technique isn't only for steelheading. Manufacturers have come to recognize this and now offer a variety of types and variations of two handed rods and lines to match for a multitude of different species. Now you will find rods from 11 feet to over 17 feet and from 5wt. to 12wt. being used for trout, stripers in saltwater and even tarpon in the Florida Keys.

The spey cast is a wonderful tool and we’d like to help you master it.

Join us for a spey clinic on July 17 and 18 with Sage Certified instructor John Hazelett.

Day 1 - 6:00PM – 7:30PM

Class begins the evening of July 17th at the FlyWay Shop at 6:00PM when John will go over equipment and related gear, terminology and offering a question and answer time.

Day 2 – 8:30AM – 2:30PM

We will meet at the FlyWay Shop and then head to the river. You will learn casting from river right and river left. Learn at least three different spey casts and improve your spey casting distance.  Lunch is provided and a variety of rods will be available to cast.  If you already have a spey rod bring it with you to maximize your opportunity to improve with your own equipment.
